Hello dear readers, last week’s newsletter was a long and heavy one, so we are keeping it light and easy today.
I write to you from my little casita in Marfa, Texas. It’s my last day here for a while, so I’m packing up all my things and figuring out what stays and what comes back with me to LA.
I have been writing up a storm, and I now have 10 songs written for my next album. I’d like to have at least 12 before I go into the studio to record, and my goal is to be able to do that this summer.
I love writing out here. I get into such a good flow. It’s truly heavenly. I spend my days writing and when I need breaks I walk to the nearby coffee shop that’s just down the alley from me or I ride my bike to the post office and check my PO box. I get dinner at one of two restaurants, a drink at one of the two bars. I do yoga and sculpt classes at the one exercise studio in town. I listen to Marfa Public Radio around the house. There are occasionally events and art things and shows around town that I like to go to. It’s simple here. A friend once described it as like living in a Medieval village where you just walk around and find everything you need, and I couldn’t agree more.
But, I have to get out from time to time. I’ve learned I can’t live here full time or the shine wears off for me and I get restless and resentful. I start to get annoyed by how far away the airport is when I need to travel for work. I get bored. I’ll miss LA.
So, back to LA I go. I am looking forward to seeing some shows friends of mine are playing around town, a few birthday parties, a friend’s comedy special premiere, singing a song at KFM Country Karaoke. I’m getting a haircut. City stuff! I’ll get back into my writing flow, hopefully, and I’ll be gearing up for my solo tour which is just over a month away. A lot to look forward to.
Last Friday, I played a solo show in El Paso, which is about a 3 hour drive from Marfa and it is also the home of the closest airport. I really haven’t spent much time in El Paso because I am usually just passing through. This past weekend I got to actually hang out a little and I loved being there. We stayed at a fun hotel, the show was great and everyone was super nice, and I got to do some very fun shopping around downtown.
And, as anyone who follows me on social media now knows, the big news is I wore pants to play a show.
I want to dive into the whole pants thing a little bit. It’s about more to me than just a fashion choice, there’s kind of a deeper thing going on that has to do with body image. As Miranda July sometimes says on her excellent Substack, the vulnerability level is high here, so we are going to go behind a paywall now…
